SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The City of Santa Clara received a $25,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) that will fund activities emphasizing bicycle and pedestrian safety.
The OTS grant will be used to support the City of Santa Clara’s Safe Routes to School program, which helps improve the safety of children walking, bicycling, or scootering to school. “This grant is tremendously helpful,” says City Manager Rajeev Batra, “and will help us continue to ensure our children get to school and return home safely.”
Grant funds will support a variety of activities focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety including:
- Bicycle training courses to educate youth on safe riding behaviors.
- Helmet fitting inspections and distribution of helmets during youth safety trainings at schools participating within our Safe Routes to School Program.
- Free safety equipment such as reflective armbands/leg bands and bicycle headlights/taillights to children at schools participating within our Safe Routes to School Program.
“Every bicyclist and pedestrian should feel safe on the road,” OTS Director Barbara Rooney said. “Education is one of many important tools that collectively work to make sure everyone, regardless of how they travel, reaches their destination safely.”
The grant program will run through September 2023. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
